Question and Objectives:
Where Function Meets Play

How might we design a functional, playful, and engaging loft bed for children, seamlessly integrating elements of surprise, functionality and storage solutions?

Ideation & Themes:
From Head-in-the-Clouds to
Mushroom House

After exploring various out-of-the-box themes, such as the mushroom house, head-in- the-clouds, and role-playing as adults, the team and I chose to concentrate on the 'cabin in the woods/treehouse’ theme for a gender-neutral bed.

Then, I analyzed similar beds in the market. This research informed my design decisions, ensuring our Homecentre treehouse bed stood out from the competition while carefully catering to children’s preferences and parent’s needs.

A key priority was ensuring the loft bed incorporated multifunctional features and storage solutions, transforming the loft bed into more than just a bed.

I cycled through several design iterations, fine-tuning the concept with feedback from the team to strike the perfect balance between functionality, safety, and fun.

Product Development:
Prototype to mass production

Once the team agreed on the design, we collaborated with one of our trusted suppliers in Malaysia to bring our vision to life. The prototyping phase always requires design refinements for material optimization, supplier capabilities, and market availability.

After finalizing the prototype, we sent it to a third party for safety testing according to European safety standards before green-lighting Trevor for mass production.

The Final Trevor Loft Bed:
Climb into your treehouse

Inspired by a cabin-in-the-woods, this loft bed provides a versatile environment, that adapts and evolves alongside children’s development for years to come.

Key Features

  • Ladder and slide interchangeable points of access (at assembly)

  • Hammock under the bed for day-dreaming

  • Surprise: ambient LED strip with a switch, creating a cozy reading nook

I loved designing the Trevor Treehouse which taps into children’s imagination, creating a dynamic space for play, storage, and growth.
